Delphi

There’s a bed for most budgets at the modern, multipurpose Delphi Resort (095-42208; www.delphiadventureresort.com; off R335; dm €15-17, d €129, ste €199-229; ), from standard guest rooms, loft rooms and larger suites (some with enormous timber decks) to luxury six-bed dorms with bathrooms where each bunk has its own USB charger and reading light. A cavernous pub-restaurant serves great bar food (mains €12 to €29). Spa treatments use hand-harvested seaweed and the property’s own mountain spring water. There’s a good cafe (095-42208; www.delphiadventureresort.com; Delphi Resort, off the R335; mains from €7; 9.30am-5.30pm; ) here as well.

Dwarfed by the mountainous backdrop, Delphi Lodge (095-42222; www.delphilodge.ie; off R335; s from €150, d €265-295, f €295, ste €295; ), a wonderful 1830s Georgian mansion beside Fin Lough, was built by the Marquis of Sligo. The 13-room country hotel features beautiful interiors, colossal 405-hectare grounds, delicious food (six-course dinner €65) and a serious lack of pretension. It’s popular with fishers (half-day with fishing tutor €180) and those seeking relaxation and escape.
